Move Ring

Definition

The Apple Watch ring that tracks active calories burned during the day. You set a daily Move goal (in calories) and the ring fills as you move. It's the closest thing to a universal 'today’s activity' metric across the Apple ecosystem.

How MoveTogether uses it.

MoveTogether reads your Move ring through Apple Health on iPhone. Several scoring methods, Ring Close Count, Percentage of Goals, and Raw Numbers, use Move ring data directly. The Move ring is the most common scoring axis in MoveTogether competitions, because it captures effort regardless of which workout you're doing.

If you don't have an Apple Watch, the iPhone's motion coprocessor estimates Active Energy and writes it to Apple Health, so even without a wearable, your Move ring still fills (just less precisely).

Two practical notes. First, your Move goal is personal and adjustable on the watch or in the Fitness app, which is why Percentage of Goals scores goal completion rather than raw calories: raising your goal makes each percentage point harder to earn, not cheaper. Second, the ring resets at local midnight, and MoveTogether records activity against your own local calendar day. A late-night session counts toward the day you actually did it rather than sliding into tomorrow for friends in other time zones, which matters more than it sounds in a competition that spans continents.
