Native via Apple Health

No wearable? No problem.

MoveTogether reads your activity straight from Apple Health on iPhone — so anything that writes to Apple Health competes. Your Apple Watch. Your Tonal. Your Peloton. Your MIRROR or NordicTrack. Any of 100+ fitness apps in the App Store. Even your iPhone alone, with no equipment at all. The leaderboard is the same; the bar to entry is much lower.

Native via Apple Health on iPhone.

When you connect MoveTogether, we ask Apple Health for read-only access to four data types: Steps, Active Energy, Exercise Minutes, and Workouts. From that moment on, any activity that writes to Apple Health — from any source, any app, any equipment — flows into MoveTogether automatically. Apple Health does the aggregation; we do the competition.

Read-only HealthKit access only. Permissions can be revoked anytime via iPhone Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices.

What can feed your Apple Health?

Tap any of these during onboarding to tell Coach Mo what equipment you train on. The data flows whether or not you tag it — but tagging gets you equipment-aware coaching ("for your next Tonal session..."). The selectable categories:

  • Apple Watch (Series 4 and later)
  • Tonal (smart strength trainer)
  • Peloton (Bike, Bike+, Tread, Row, App)
  • MIRROR (Lululemon connected fitness mirror)
  • NordicTrack (iFit-connected treadmills, bikes, rowers)
  • Smart treadmills (any HealthKit-compatible model)
  • Spin bikes (any HealthKit-compatible model)
  • Smart scales (any HealthKit-compatible model)
  • Just my iPhone (no equipment — built-in motion sensors count steps and active energy)

What we read from Apple Health.

MoveTogether normalizes a small set of activity metrics across every supported wearable. Here’s what specifically comes through from Apple Health.

MetricSupportedNotes
StepsYesiPhone's M-series motion coprocessor counts steps even without a watch.
Active caloriesYesFrom any HealthKit-writing source — equipment, watch, or iPhone-estimated.
Exercise minutesYesHKActivitySummary.appleExerciseTime auto-aggregates all third-party workouts.
WorkoutsYesEvery workout type any app or equipment writes to Apple Health.

If you train with equipment that doesn't write to Apple Health, those workouts won't appear. Most major brands do — Tonal, Peloton, MIRROR, NordicTrack/iFit, Apple Watch, and the 100+ fitness apps that include Strava, Strong, Hevy, AllTrails, Nike Run Club, Apple Fitness+, and more.

Sync cadence

Within minutes

Apple Health delivers activity updates to MoveTogether in the background as new workouts and steps are written. The leaderboard usually reflects new activity within a couple of minutes of it appearing in Apple Health. Pull-to-refresh on any screen to force an immediate sync.

Best scoring methods for Apple Health.

Apple Health users have the broadest scoring flexibility because the iPhone always reports steps. The methods that work best:

Recommended for Apple Health

Percentage of Goals

The most cross-source-fair method. A Tonal-only user with a 200-calorie Move goal scores fairly against an Apple Watch user with 600. Apple Health users with very different equipment setups can compete head-to-head.

Workout Based

Tailored to equipment users. Counts only the activity inside specific workout types — exactly what Tonal, Peloton, and MIRROR sessions are.

Step Count

Works for everyone, even iPhone-only users — the iPhone's motion sensor counts steps without a watch.

Apple Health questions, briefly answered.

Do I need an Apple Watch to use MoveTogether?

No. If you have an iPhone, you can compete. Steps and Active Energy estimates flow from the iPhone's motion sensors automatically. If you train with Tonal, Peloton, MIRROR, NordicTrack, or any other Apple Health-compatible equipment, those workouts also flow in. The Apple Watch is one option — not a requirement.

Does MoveTogether work with my Tonal / Peloton / MIRROR?

Yes, if it writes to Apple Health. Tonal, Peloton (Bike, Bike+, Tread, Row, App), MIRROR, NordicTrack (iFit), and most major connected-fitness brands all write to Apple Health. When your equipment's app saves a workout to Health, MoveTogether reads it for the leaderboard. Tag your equipment during onboarding and Coach Mo gives you equipment-aware advice.

What about iPhone-only? No watch, no equipment?

Works. The iPhone's built-in motion coprocessor counts steps and estimates Active Energy whenever the phone's on you. You can join Step Count and Percentage of Goals competitions with iPhone alone. Workout Based competitions need workouts logged somewhere — either an Apple Watch, equipment, or a fitness app you record sessions to.

Which fitness apps work via Apple Health?

Over 100. Strava, Strong, Hevy, AllTrails, Nike Run Club, Adidas Running, MapMyRun, Couch to 5K, FitBod, Centr, Apple Fitness+, Down Dog yoga, Sweat — basically anything in the App Store's Health & Fitness category that writes to Apple Health is supported automatically. We don't keep a per-app allowlist; if the app writes a workout to Health, we read it.

Will Coach Mo know what equipment I use?

Yes, if you tell it. During onboarding you pick the equipment that feeds your Apple Health (Apple Watch, Tonal, Peloton, etc.). That selection becomes context for Coach Mo, so advice references your actual setup — "for your next Tonal session," "on your Peloton tomorrow," rather than generic gym-rat language.

I have an Apple Watch AND I use Tonal. Which path do I pick?

Apple Health, and tag both in the equipment screen. Apple Health aggregates your watch's daily activity and your Tonal workouts into one stream that MoveTogether reads. You get the best of both — comprehensive daily ring data from the watch plus tagged strength sessions from Tonal.

What about Garmin / Fitbit / Oura / WHOOP — do those work via Apple Health?

Technically yes, but the relationship is uneven — those devices' versions of Apple Health data tend to lag and miss workouts. For Garmin, Google Fitbit, Oura, and WHOOP, use the dedicated OAuth integration (see their individual feature pages). For Apple Watch, Tonal, Peloton, MIRROR, NordicTrack, and iPhone-only, Apple Health is the right path.

Compete without buying a watch.

MoveTogether's most under-appreciated feature: you don't need a wearable. If you have an iPhone, you have everything you need to start.
