Demotion Protection
Definition
An automatic one-time safety net in Move Leagues. If you'd otherwise demote a tier (by finishing in the bottom 5 of your cohort), an available protection consumes itself and you stay in your current tier instead. Refills over time.
How MoveTogether uses it.
Every MoveTogether user starts with one demotion protection in the bank. It absorbs the next demotion automatically, you don't choose when to use it. The system refills protections over time based on engagement, so users who keep showing up periodically get their safety net back.
The design intent: first-time demotions are the most psychologically punishing moment in any league system. The protection takes the edge off a single bad week (vacation, illness, life happening) without removing the stakes, you only have one in the bank at any moment, so you can't coast indefinitely.
Two things it is not. It is not a Streak Freeze, which is a separate mechanic that covers missed qualifying days inside a weekly workout streak and has its own earning rules. And it is not something you can stockpile: the bank holds one, so a second bad week back to back will demote you however long you have been playing. Because it spends itself automatically on the next demotion you would otherwise take, there is no decision to make and no way to hold it back for a week you care about more. Showing up is what refills it.
